Kiawah Island Marathon race guide

Kiawah Island is about as flat as a marathon gets: the whole course stays within about 10 feet of sea level. It loops through the island’s resort community, out to its quiet eastern end at High Dunes and back through maritime forest, marsh and neighborhoods to West Beach. With cool December weather and pace groups, it’s a popular Boston qualifier. The trade-offs are a small field, quiet stretches, and roads that stay open to traffic.

The course

Mile by mile, at your pace

  1. Miles0–3

West Beach to the Parkway Flat

You start outside the West Beach Conference Center and run through the West Beach neighborhoods to Kiawah Island Parkway, then loop south on Sea Forest Drive. The field is small and the start isn’t seeded, so line up by pace and settle in quickly.

    8:00 /miMile 3 at 24:018:24 a.m.

  2. Miles3–7

    Governors Drive Flat

East along Governors Drive, under live oaks and past the island’s golf courses, with a loop to the north side near marsh views around mile 5. Flat and shaded. Lock into goal pace.

    8:00 /miMile 7 at 56:038:56 a.m.

  3. Miles7–12

Ocean Course & High Dunes Flat

Ocean Course Drive takes you out to the island’s eastern end, along High Dunes Lane to a turnaround and a loop of Victory Bay Lane. It’s beautiful and very quiet, and the wind off the water can be noticeable. Find someone to run with.

    8:01 /miMile 12 at 1:36:059:36 a.m.

  4. Miles12–18

    Flyway, Surfsong & Bufflehead Flat

Back west on Ocean Course Drive, then a series of turns through the island’s middle on Flyway Drive, Surfsong Road, Glen Abbey and Bufflehead Drive. You pass halfway on the way back from the east end. Count the turns, not the miles.

    8:00 /miMile 18 at 2:24:0810:24 a.m.

  5. Miles18–23.5

    Governors & Ocean Green Flat

North and west again along Governors Drive and Goldeneye Drive, then south through Ocean Green Drive and Green Dolphin Way toward the beach side of the island. This is where the race gets hard. Keep your rhythm and take your gels.

    8:01 /miMile 23.5 at 3:08:1211:08 a.m.

  6. Miles23.5–26.2

Sea Forest & Eugenia to the finish Flat

Sea Forest Drive and Eugenia Avenue bring you back to West Beach and the finish at the conference center. It’s flat to the end, so if you’ve paced well, this is where you can race.

Race strategy

How to pace the Kiawah Island Marathon

Run even, start to finish

With no hills to plan around, even pacing is the whole strategy. Hold goal pace from mile 1 and only press after mile 20.

Join a pace group

The race brings in pace groups, and on a quiet island course a group is worth a lot. Line up with yours at the start.

Stay alert on open roads

Roads remain open to traffic during the race. Run where marshals direct you, and keep earbuds to one ear or none.

The last few weeks

Train for this course

  • Do flat long runs with long blocks at goal pace, since that’s exactly what the race asks for.
  • Practice running alone at goal pace, without a crowd or a group, for stretches of several miles.
  • Practice tight turns and quick re-acceleration; the course has many of them in the back half.

Race-day weather

December on the South Carolina coast is usually mild, with race mornings often in the 40s or 50s°F. It can be cold, and wind off the ocean or the marsh is common on the exposed eastern miles.

Race morning

Getting to the start

  • If you’re staying off the island, a free shuttle runs from parking near Freshfields Village early on race morning.
  • Packet pickup is at the West Beach Conference Center on Thursday and Friday, with some pickup on race morning.
  • Gear check is at the race venue, and the start and finish are at the same place.
  • Aid stations are every 2 to 3 miles, with fruit at many of them.

Questions runners ask.

Is Kiawah Island a Boston qualifier?

Yes. The marathon is USATF-certified and sanctioned, and the race says it’s a Boston qualifier. It’s flat, and December weather is usually cool.

What is the time limit?

Six and a half hours. The course officially closes at 2:30 p.m.

Can spectators watch on the course?

Most of the course is inside Kiawah’s private community, so spectator access is limited. The start and finish at West Beach are the easiest places to watch. Check the race’s spectator page.

Has the 2026 course been published?

Not yet: the race’s current map is the 2025 route, which this guide follows. Check the official site for any changes before race day.
